The Lodge is fully private and equipped with luxury furnishing and artistic touches throughout. With the panoramic views from your private deck you are sure to experience true serenity!
Rainforest Ridge Eco-Lodge is set on our private 11ha nature reserve which backs onto the Salt River and the Western border of the Tsitsikamma National Park.
The lodge is on a plateau overlooking the gorge which has a very unique subtropical rainforest in the bottom dominated by the gorgeous giant strelitzia (wild banana) trees. Around the lodge on the ridge is a wonderful big dam you can swim in and a Kirstenbosch botanic garden collection of rare trees & plants. Around the gardens there is many benches at scenic spots to take a break. Beyond the gardens you can follow one of the many paths through the fynbos and down into the Sub-tropical rainforest below in the gorge.
150m out along the ridge from the lodge is the wedding and event venue. As a guest you are also welcome to make use of this space and the XL Safari Braai. Its quite an experience sitting around the fire at night in complete raw nature but surrounded by luxury and creature comforts.
Rainwater is harvested from a dam and held in storage tanks for household use, while cooking is done using natural gas. At the main house, a veranda overlooking the nature reserve and a semi-outdoor lounge area provide intimate relaxation space. A pizza oven in the semi-outdoor lounge area is perfect for making the most amazing fresh pizzas, which you can top with herbs from the vegetable garden! Depending on the season, breakfast (self-catering only) can be taken on the veranda overlooking mountains, canyons and the ocean in the distance, or at Peppermill restaurant, a mere 4-minute drive away. Local chickens lay our eggs and there is a wide variety of birdlife to watch as well.
While WiFi is present if needed, it is definitely not the main attraction or purpose for visiting African Crags Eco-Lodge. Along with the large garden, there are plenty of interesting places for children to play. Your kids will love the ‘Kids-Hike Quiz’, which covers topics such as climate, environment and nature. At African Crags you will find a peaceful space in which to read, play games, swim and lounge at the natural dam, or just contemplate how beautiful our planet still is. The property and surrounding areas have revealed Stone Age tools (on display) that date back to between 150,000 – 200,000 years ago. Theory has it that this is the place where our ancient ancestors made the last jump into becoming modern Homo Sapiens. If you look at the surroundings, you can see how nature provided the perfect ingredients for this remarkable event in our history.
